If a certain page on an Internet site does not load for some reason or in case a link is broken, the website visitor shall see an error page with a generic message. The page will have nothing in common with the rest of the site, that may make the visitor leave your site. A potential solution in this case is a function offered by some website hosting providers - the option to set up your own customized error pages that will have the same style and design as your website and which could contain any text or images that you would like based on the specific error. There are 4 standard errors which may occur and they involve the following so-called HTTP status codes - 400, when your browser sends a bad request to the hosting server and it can't be processed; 401, if you are supposed to log in to see a webpage, but you haven't done this yet; 403, if you do not have an authorization to see a specific page; and 404, when a link that you've clicked leads to a file that does not exist. In any of these cases, visitors will be able to see your custom content rather than a generic error page.

Custom Error Pages in Hosting

You will be able to set up customized error pages for any of your domains or subdomains. The function is supported by all hosting package which we offer, so as soon as you log in to your Hepsia CP and check out the Hosted Domains section, you can easily click on the Edit button for a domain/subdomain and in the pop-up which will appear, you may choose the type of error page that should appear - a default one from our system, a typical Apache web server page or a custom one. For the latter option, you will need to assign the URL to the page, so if you use personalized pages, you must upload the files inside your website hosting account first. An alternative way is to use an .htaccess file placed inside the domain or subdomain folder with a line for every error type. The actual syntax can be found in our Knowledge Base, so that you can use this function even if you don't have any previous experience.

Custom Error Pages in Semi-dedicated Servers

Our Linux semi-dedicated servers support tailor-made error pages, so you'll be able to employ this feature for each and every domain or subdomain hosted inside your account. All it takes to do this is to visit the Hosted Domains section of the Hepsia Control Panel, to click on the Edit button associated with the specific domain/subdomain and to type the link to the custom-made file. You'll be able to do this individually for each error type. You will be able to switch back to a default error page anytime if needed and the change will take effect immediately. Another way to get the same exact result is to place an .htaccess file inside the domain or subdomain folder associated with the website that you'd like to change and to input a couple of lines of code inside it. If you'd like to try this method, you could copy and paste the necessary code from our Knowledge Base article on custom error pages, hence you will not need any coding skills or previous experience.
